Good oral health is not difficult to achieve, but most of us live busy lives, juggling our jobs and families, as well as trying to find time for our own hobbies.
It is perhaps not too surprising then, that some of the ‘little’ things can sometimes be ignored.
It is often just the things that do take a few minutes that can make all the difference to how healthy our teeth and gums are. Please take a look below, at the oral health checklist to see if you are missing any of these, thereby potentially putting your teeth at risk.
- Diet – Yes, it’s the sugar thing again. Unfortunately, it is a fact that sugar is one of the most unhealthy foods for our teeth. Reducing the amount of sugar that you eat and drink will certainly be better for your teeth and gums.
- Hydration – Stay hydrated with water. Not only will water not damage your teeth as sugary drinks will, but a dry mouth can harbour excessive ‘bad’ oral bacteria and may well lead to gum disease.
- Brush your teeth – Most of us do this, but too many of us do so using an old toothbrush. If yours is more than three months old (or the head of an electric brush is), throw it out and replace it. It will not be very useful in removing food and bacteria from the mouth.
- Fluoride – Check your toothpaste. Most toothpastes do contain fluoride, which hardens the enamel of the teeth, improving their protection. Not all do though, especially ‘natural’ ones. If yours doesn’t, make sure that you change to a fluoride toothpaste.
- Floss – Many dental problems start in the spaces between our teeth where a toothbrush struggles to reach. Dental floss is an effective way of cleaning this area if done correctly.Our dental hygienist’s will be able to demonstrate the best way to do this. Interdental brushes are also available as an alternative to floss.
- Hygienist visits – Never underestimate the role of a dental hygienist in keeping your teeth and gums healthy. Not only will they clean them, removing hardened bacteria which home brushing alone is unable to, but also offer advice on how to improve the way you look after your teeth and gums.
- Keep dental appointments – Everyone should see their dentist for a checkup every six months or even more frequently should your dentist recommend it. Your oral health check will determine if there are any areas of improvement needed in the way that you look after your teeth and gums. Regular checks also mean that, where any problems are detected, they can be treated in a less invasive manner than if left for longer.
- Chew sugar free gum – This is not essential, but studies have shown that doing so can help to remove minute food particles and bacteria from your teeth and gum line. Remember though, to dispose of your gum carefully and do not swallow it.
Whilst some of us may develop phobias about visiting the dentist, possibly due to a previous bad experience with another dentist; for many of us, it is a fear that builds up over a long period of time, and may possibly start when we are very young. In some cases, this dental phobia may even be passed on, accidentally, by parents who are afraid of the dentist themselves!
Parents will always want the best for their children, and will want them to have healthy and attractive teeth. If children develop a fear of the dentist, they may go on to avoid appointments, allowing their teeth to deteriorate.
Bring them to see us early on
Some studies have indicated that taking children to the dentist very early on in life allows them to get used to the smells and sounds of the dental practice. The idea of this is that dental visits will then seem to be perfectly normal and nothing to be feared. Whilst there is no fixed age at which you should first bring a child, the general feeling is that around the time of their first birthday is probably a good time, as it is early enough for them to start to take things in, but too early for any treatment to be needed. Doing this will provide them with a gentle introduction to the Dental Excellence team.

Did You Know There Are Many Ways To Get Whiter Teeth Naturally? No? Well I’ll Let You In On This Little Secret!!
Many people want whiter teeth without the cost of Dental Whitening, and although profession Dental Whitening will always get you the best results, there are ways to whiten your teeth naturally from home.
Activated Charcoal – The thought of brushing your teeth with a black substance is terrifying! However, charcoal is proven to be a natural stain remover. At first, you may think you’ve been part of a cruel prank that will stain your teeth even more, but this works because activated charcoal is a highly absorbent porous substance that binds to things like tannin’s that stain teeth and leave them yellow or brown. How Does It Work? Simply dip your toothbrush into some powdered charcoal and brush as normal. Another way that will produce results more quickly is to mix a teaspoon of charcoal powder into some water and swish with it for a few minutes. Then, spit the water and leave the remaining charcoal in the mouth for a few minutes so that it has time to bind to stains. Often, when water fluoridation appears in the headlines it is presented as a controversial subject. However, the evidence is clear that water fluoridation is a safe and effective measure to help people improve their oral health.
Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral found in water in varying amounts, depending on where in the UK you live.
It can help to prevent tooth decay, which is why it’s added to many brands of toothpaste and, in some areas, to the water supply through a process called fluoridation.
Among children aged one to four, child hospital admissions due to tooth decay are halved in fluoridated areas compared to non-fluoridated. It continues to be an effective intervention for local councils to consider in their efforts to reduce tooth decay.
There have been some concerns that fluoride may be linked to a variety of health conditions, however, reviews of the risks have so far found no convincing evidence to support these concerns.
One noticed risk is a condition called dental fluorosis, this can sometimes occur if a child’s teeth are exposed to too much fluoride when they’re developing. Mild dental fluorosis can be seen as very fine pearly white lines or flecking on the surface of the teeth. Severe fluorosis can cause the tooth’s enamel to become pitted or discoloured. It’s uncommon in the UK for fluorosis to be severe enough to seriously affect the appearance of teeth, this is because fluoride levels in water are carefully monitored.
Evidence has shown that the benefits of fluoride far outweigh the risks and that fluoride is proven to reduce the amount of dental-decay cases across the UK.
