DENTAL
EXCELLENCE

AT THE OLD BANK HOUSE

Seminars

Dental Excellence runs a monthly seminar programme of fully verifiable CPD delivered by experts in their field. The evening seminars are free to attend and most are designed for the whole dental team. They are held on the last Tuesday of each month from 7.30 pm to 9.30 pm in our own seminar room at the practice. These seminars include drinks and buffet food.

Jeremy is also a clinical coach in implantology, appointed by ASTRATech UK. Three of the seminars are clinical coaching sessions and these run at different times (3.00 pm to 7.00 pm) and are aimed at dentists only. The clinical coaching sessions need to be booked as a block of three, cost £250 and should be arranged through ASTRATech.

Defensive Dentistry – Keeping safe from GDC disciplinary proceedings

Now that all members of the team need to be registered, all members need to be aware of potential disciplinary action. You will learn:

  • How recent changes at the GDC have affected the burden of proof
  • Common errors that catch dentists out
  • Ways to maximise your defence
  • How the whole team can work together to avoid trouble
  • How to negotiate the issue of consent
  • How basic periodontal monitoring is critical
  • The most common reason for disciplinary proceedings
  • How referral of the right patients at the right time can protect you and the team

Clinical Tips in Endodontics and Periodontics

A whistle stop tour, giving useful tips for those tricky cases. You will learn:

  • The basics of endodontics – the difference between success & failure
  • The mechanism of the endo/perio interface
  • Cracked tooth syndrome – how to diagnose and treat
  • How to find elusive canals
  • How to anaesthetise the ‘hot tooth’
  • How to do a reliable pulpotomy
  • An update on the latest periodontal diseases
  • How to manage basic periodontal cases properly
  • Why and when to refer

Dental Implants – Art and Science

Implants are now a predictable treatment for our patients, offering solutions that were not available before. Even if you do not do implants yourself, it is important to know the basics of the treatment protocols so that you can refer suitable patients. You will learn:

  • A brief history of dental implantology
  • The basics of current implant design
  • Mechanical loading limitations of implants
  • The importance of gingival biotype
  • How implant design affects the soft tissue (aesthetic) factors
  • The fundamentals factors for pre-treatment assessment
  • Simple plastic surgery procedures for soft tissue manipulation
  • How advanced procedures such as block bone grafting and sinus lifting are used
  • How to deal with vital anatomical structures

Save or extract? – When to restore a tooth & when to place an implant

One of the most difficult decisions a clinician has to make is when a tooth should be extracted now that implants offer a predictable way of replacing a tooth. You will learn:

  • The limitations of dental implants
  • The criteria for endodontic restoration
  • The criteria for periodontal treatment
  • The factors that make dental implants predictable in the long term
  • The factors that make dental implants unpredictable

ASTRA Clinical coaching

The clinical coaching seminars are designed for practitioners who are starting out in dental implants. They are suitable for those who want to do the whole process (surgical & restorative) or just the restorative aspects. The sessions are ‘hands-on’ and participants are encouraged to bring real patient cases for planning during the seminars. The seminars must be booked as a block of three because the programme is modular and designed to follow actual patient cases through in real time. Delegates will learn:

  • The science behind the ASTRA implant design
  • The different components available with the system and how and when to use them
  • Principles of treatment planning for basic cases
  • Planning using radiographs and CT scans
  • Surgical asepsis
  • Different techniques for surgical placement of  implant fixtures
  • Soft tissue management, flap design and plastic techniques
  • Techniques for managing tissues at second stage
  • Impression techniques
  • How to select abutments and restorative components
  • How to manage occlusion and articulation
  • Tips for excellent aesthetics
  • Post operative care
  • How to avoid problems
  • How to deal with a failing implant fixture

Session 1 will cover the basic science of implantology, the components of the system (surgical & restorative) and principles of treatment planning. Delegates are encouraged to bring actual case notes, study casts and radiographs with them.

Session 2 will cover more advanced treatment planning, surgical techniques for first & second stage, and impression techniques.

Session 3 is scheduled 3 months later so that actual cases can be followed through. It will cover occlusal theory, restorative techniques, post-operative care & management of failing implants.
