At Dental Excellence, our highly trained and specialised dental team can provide a wide range of restorative treatments, including onlays.
Onlays work in a similar way to crowns. Designed to repair a tooth that has been damaged through decay, injury, or wear and tear, they are used in cases where the damage is too substantial to be treated with a simple filling. They can also offer a more conservative option to a crown when restoring a tooth. They are less invasive in the application and leave more of the natural tooth in place.
Onlays are often used on teeth at the back of the mouth where there is a much larger surface area and are applied in a similar way to a filling. When applying an onlay, the restoration is bonded to the surface of the tooth, thereby helping to strengthen and fortify the remaining natural tooth.
Onlays are made off-site by skilled dental technicians and are then applied here in the practice. First, an impression or scan of the mouth will be taken, which will be used to make the onlay and then a temporary onlay will be placed to ensure function in the interim. Onlays can be made to fit in with the rest of the mouth, leaving a natural-looking finish that no one will notice.
